//Russian Winter//

Most of people think that it is very cold in Russia. That almost the whole year there is snow here, people drink vodka to get warm and stay at home most of the time...

Well, it's not like that.

First of all - Russia is the largest country in the world, so we have lot's of natural areas. All of them have different seasons durations and  it's own climate.

I took this photo in winter 2012 in my hometown. It was -30 outside.

We have some regions near the Black Sea (I hope you know about Sochi :)) so they even don't have real winter. They can have no snow during winter at all. The average temperature there is +7 C in winter.

For other regions the winter is quite cold (comparing to other countries). It can be between -15C and -40C.

Don't be afraid of -40C :) In my home region (Murmansk city, nearby Norway) the average temperature for winter is about -15, but there are couple of weeks with -25C. And these -25 feel like -40 in Siberia because of humidity. The higher it is, the colder it will be with the same temperature. -15C in St. Petersburg is much more colder than -15C in Chelyabinsk (Ural mountains).

The duration of this season is also depend on the area. There is snow 8-9 months in a year. But how about Canada? It is pretty same in the north of it. In other regions there is a "classic" - 3 months since december till march. So, check how about the region where you would like to go before you stay in airport somewhere in russia in a warm hat and where is +15C outside and alost summer.

What to wear in russian winter

I will write one more post about it but as for now, I will tell you something briefly.
It is not cold for russians in winter because we wear winter clothes! Yep, that is how we survive :)

The trick is that we don't wear summer shoes when it's -10C outside, we have a hat for strong wind and have not just jackets, but warm winter ones.

Our winter shoes are produced from leather with fur inside. We can wait for a bus for about 10 minutes and it will be not cold. Of course, there are some ppl who try to wear snickers in winter but they will be called idiots by others... :)

Knitted scarf, hat and gloves - all the people have them at home.
